The Great Gatsby Essay - Prompt #1
The last line of the book is arguably the most
important: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly into
the past.” It represents what life is about.
At this point, the author of the novel,
Fitzgerald, finishes the book by telling us that quote. It is important to
understand the meaning of it. The phrase symbolizes life because when you are
trying to move forward and leave the past behind, you must struggle against the
current. You are trying to go one way, but the current is pulling you back by
going to the opposite way.
But also, this quote essentially summarizes the
plot of the novel. The Great Gatsby is about how the rich and mysterious James
Gatz (Gatsby) is trying to move on with life but something is trying to pull
him back into the past. In the previous quote, this is symbolized by the
current. He is struggling to move forward and forget about the past, but Gatsby
is being challenged by life when facing difficult situations throughout the
book.
To reiterate, Fitzgerald is saying that
"life goes on". He is telling the reader that even as we try to move
forward in life, we will struggle and face situations that will constantly try
to pull us back.
Additionally, after reading the book, the
reader might apply this in life. For example, being always ready to face
strenuous circumstances at any time. This because to move forward in life, we must
struggle to forget about the past.
In conclusion, the last line of the book is
conceivably the most important: “So we beat on, boats against the current,
borne ceaselessly into the past.” And we all as readers must understand its
suggestion to implement it in life.
