Fahrenheit 451 - Essay
The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury shows a similar situation on the role of technology in society in 2018. The author uses symbolism to describe society's attitude toward mistakes, for example, people not reading books.
Firstly, Montag (the main character) works as a fireman. In his world, firemen do not stop fires, they start them. After reading the novel, the reader understands that books are considered a dangerous weapon for society. The government is scared of people reading books because it makes people think. Reading books makes us smarter, it is a way to get experience in different situations in life. However, at the beginning of the text, Montag has a short intention of reading books. He is different from the other firemen because he is starting to reflect about the way government and propaganda controls people. We can see that the television controls people and keeps them away from books.
Equally important, one of Bradbury's prediction that caught my attention while reading the text was, seashells radio, today better known as earbuds. We learned that seashell radios are small radios that fit into the ears like hearing aids. This is a prediction of a globally popular object that today in 2018 is not as surprising as it was in the days Ray wrote the novel.
Also, when Montag's desire of reading a book increases his attitude changes as well. I would compare this situation with High school and college education. First, this made me see high school as a preparation for life. Not only as a path to college. High school is more important than most of the students think because not only learn something new every day but we also grow and become more aware of the situations in life. In other words, after reading the book, I would say every year high school not only teaches us life lessons but it teaches us how to live.
In addition, Ray Bradbury's tone could be described as depressing. Evidence for this is found in the fact that books are no longer used for reading. "It's not books you need, its some of the things that once were in books", this quote by Faber (the English teacher Montag asks for help) means that the information that books give us is truly important if we expect to understand life. Books portray human experiences that will help us overcome challenges we might face in life.
Furthermore, Bradbury uses a good syntax pattern by writing long sentences with shorter ones and vice versa. This makes more understandable the sequence of events. It could also be a better way to organize ideas. Similarly, Ray uses symbolism when Granger compares mankind to a Phoenix that "burns itself up and then rises out of its ashes". The phoenix symbolizes man's ability to recognize when he has made a mistake, learn from it and try to not make that mistake again.
In conclusion, Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 exhibits the theme of the role of technology in society in 2018, that is similar to Montag's world by the way television and propaganda controls the mind of society by keeping people distracted and not persuading them to read books.
